THE “most popular open market in England” will get a £2.5m upgrade.
Cabinet agreed yesterday to fund the improvements to Dewsbury Market.
The work will include £289,000 to bring the fish block up to health and safety standards and £166,000 for shutters to protect the semi-covered area from vandalism and theft.
Kirklees will also spend £754,000 repairing and repainting stalls.
The council will also invest £230,000 in a new seating area with interactive art features.
The toilets will also be refurbished at a cost of £73,000.
Council leader Clr Mehboob Khan welcomed the investment. He said: “This scheme will make a significant impact on this very popular market – the most popular open market in England.
“We want to do a first-class job.”
The work is due to start in July and be finished by April 2010. Work will be suspended for four weeks over Christmas.
In 2007 Kirklees spent £1.52m improving the Market Hall.
