DEVELOPERS have been asked to suggest plans for run-down historic chapels.

Kirklees Council is looking for ideas for eight buildings, including the two listed Victorian buildings in Edgerton Cemetery.

Developers must submit their ideas by April 24.

Council Cabinet member for regeneration Clr Molly Walton said Kirklees has decided to sell the building.

She said: “The council has been looking at options for the chapels for some time and a project board has decided that offering them for sale is the best way to preserve them.

“As it would cost at least £2m for the council to renovate and maintain them all, it is felt that this is the best option.”

A report by One 17 AD Chartered Architects suggests the Edgerton chapels could be used by Huddersfield University or Kirklees College.

Kirklees is also looking for ideas for the two chapels at Dewsbury Cemetery, the two at Heckmondwike and the chapels at Liversedge and Cleckheaton.

All of the chapels except Liversedge are listed buildings.
