PARTS of Birkby are to get a facelift.

Kirklees Council’s Small Centres Improvement programme is coming to Birkby and aims to make improvements to attract more people to support the shops in the centre.

The Kirklees Cabinet will hear detailed plans at its meeting on July 17.

The project, which will cost in the region of £140,000, will make streetscape and property improvements in partnership with local businesses which will help improve the local economy.

The improvements will include an appraisal of the conservation area, resurfacing and other improvements on St John’s Road and sections of Blacker Road, replacing guardrails and bollards, repairing or rebuilding damaged walls, new seats on Blacker Road, and work on the street trees including the removal and replacement of four trees.

A council spokesman said: “The aim of the work is to restore confidence in the area and help create a sense of identity by improving its appearance and its pedestrian environment.

“The scheme will also help to create or strengthen business associations or traders groups to foster a legacy of self help and mutual support”.

Clr Peter McBride, Cabinet member for Investment and Regeneration, said: “This funding is intended to bring areas back to life all over the borough and has been used with great success in other areas already with over 90% of people surveyed approving of the work.

“Focusing resources on improving the look of public areas will help to create an attractive setting for future investment.”
