MOTORISTS will be limited to 20mph through a village centre.

And speed plateaux will also be set up in Almondbury to help make the roads safer.

Kirklees Council officers are drawing up plans to reduce the speed limit in the centre of the village from 30mph to 20mph. The move would affect the top of Somerset Road, Northgate and Westgate, as well as some side streets.

Almondbury Lib Dem Clr John Smithson said: “I’m very much in favour of this. Northgate is a busy road with both traffic and pedestrians.

“The slower traffic goes, the safer it will be for pedestrians.”

Kirklees also wants to install speed plateaux in the village. One will be placed on Northgate, with another three on Fenay Lane to replace speed bumps.

Clr Smithson said: “I think the plateaux will be a big improvement on the speed bumps. I used to get a lot of complaints from drivers about speed bumps, but I can’t remember the last complaint I had about speed plateaux.”

A copy of the speed plateaux plans is available for viewing in Almondbury Library.
