OFFICIALS have drawn up a six-figure plan to cut electricity costs at the Civic Centre 3 building.

Councillors will decide tomorrow whether to spend £159,000 on energy efficiency measures at the new customer service centre.

Kirklees Council’s Labour Cabinet voted last year to close customer service points at Civic Centre 1, Kirkgate and Gateway to Care in the former NTL building on Market Street.

From May 2013, all enquiries about planning, housing, school admissions, care and council tax will be dealt with at a revamped Civic Centre 3.

The expanded customer service centre will cost £1.5m to build and will increase the civic centre’s running costs by £100,000 a year.

And now the Cabinet has been asked to come up with another £159,000 for energy efficiency measures in the new customer service centre.

The proposed investment includes:

Spending £45,000 on a new ventilation system which would retain heat better.

Investing £74,000 in energy efficient lighting.

Improving insulation in the building with £10,000 of funding.

Installing three energy efficient hand-dryers, costing £1,100.

Overall the investment is expected to pay for itself within 10 years by reducing energy use at Civic Centre 3.

The Cabinet will decide on the plan at its meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall from 4pm tomorrow.
