Travellers who have set up camp near a Huddersfield school first tried to break into a site at Lindley Moor where they spent a week last year.

Now Kirklees Council have taken immediate action by blocking the entrance with huge boulders.

Irish travellers broke a padlock on a gate to force their way onto Heatherleigh playing fields in Lindley Moor Road last August.

They stayed for a week before they were evicted, causing problems for the local community.

On Sunday night, local resident Bill Brown otherwise known as Jake Mangel-Wurzel saw a car and caravan pull up and a youth got out and tried the gate.

Mr Brown confronted the people in the car and recognised a man as one of those who stayed there illegally last year.

“I told them to get away and that we didn’t want them here again,” said Mr Brown.

“He looked at me menacingly and said: ‘We’ll be back’. I was intimidated.”

Mr Brown rang Kirklees Council on Monday morning and at lunchtime a truck turned up with eight tons of boulders which were used to block the entrance to the fields.

The same travellers parked up on Monday near Salendine Nook High School Academy. There are five caravans plus a number of cars and trucks.

The land belongs to Huddersfield New College which is to launch eviction proceedings. They are planning to go to Huddersfield County Court for an eveiction notice.

Last year it was revealed that travellers cost Kirklees Council £150,000 in just 12 months.

That included eviction and legal fees, clean-up costs and site security.

Around 15 caravans camped on the fields close to the Wappy Springs Inn last August leaving behind a mound of rubbish including human excrement, dirty nappies and rotting food.
