KIRKLEES Council has the same amount of grit available as last year.

The council has stockpiled 25,000 tonnes of rock salt for the winter.

A spokesman said: “We have enough grit to cope with a severe winter similar to those that we have experienced for the last two years. We have prepared and got ahead of the queue by securing our stocks at competitive prices and we will soon be starting the winter maintenance programme.

“This begins with checking the condition of grit bins across Kirklees.

“We would like to remind people that the rock salt in these bins is for use on the public highway and pavements and not for individual use on private property.”
