RESIDENTS failed in a bid to get speed cameras on a country road.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet Committee yesterday refused to fund the traffic control measure on Hopton Lane at Upper Hopton near Mirfield.

Thirty-six residents signed a petition calling for speed cameras on the 30mph road.

But Kirklees refused to fund the move after studying accidents on the road, which links Kirkheaton and Mirfield.

Council officers found there had been one accident between the Travellers Rest pub and Hopton Hall Lane in the last five years, which was caused by a drunk driver in a stolen car.

Under Government guidelines, councils are obliged to install speed cameras only when there have been three serious accidents along a mile-long stretch of road.

Clr David Sheard said residents could ask the three Mirfield councillors to fund the speed cameras through the Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton Committee.

The Cabinet member for highways said: “This proposal doesn’t meet our criteria but the councillors have funding available if they want to use it.”
