NEARLY £300,000 has been slashed from Kirklees Council’s roads budget.

The Labour Cabinet agreed to the cuts last night to cope with the public spending squeeze.

Kirklees had been due to invest £16.18m on roads in 2011/12.

But  that will be reduced to £15.9m to balance the budget.

The Cabinet voted unanimously to reduce spending by £278,000 overall.

The budget to improve public transport will drop from £1.076m to £616,000 - including a £320,000 cut in funding for improvements in the town centre.

However, the new plan also includes some spending increases, including an extra £125,000 to boost this year's budget for local community roads from £1.066m to £1.191m.
