NO new road safety measures are planned for a Shepley school, Kirklees Council has confirmed.
Local man Tony Watson said road safety measures near Shepley First School were “almost non-existent”.
He said the busy A629 Penistone Road near the Firth Street school, lacked the road markings and signs near some other schools, including nearby Birdsedge, which currently has a mobile speed indicator.
He also highlighted a lamppost for a flashing crossing warning sign near the school was just a bare pole without any bulb on it.
But a Kirklees Council Highways spokeswoman said road safety work had already taken place and said mobile speed signs could be used near the school.
And she said the bare poles were set to be removed.
She said: “The school flashing ambers at Shepley were removed a few years ago as with the presence of a formal zebra crossing, drivers are expected to stop whether there is a warden there or not, hence crossing patrol warning signs are not required.
“The poles for the former signs should have been removed and we will now arrange for this to be done.
“Safety improvements to help school traffic have been made along this route and in conjunction with ward councillors, including road resurfacing and path improvement to help parents gain access to the school via Lea Head.
“Ward councillors, through their local area committee, can grant funding for speed indicator devices and Kirkburton, for instance, has two signs that will be rotated around eight sites in the next 12 months to ensure that drivers don’t get used to them”.
