COUNCIL taxpayers are still waiting to get their money back from a collapsed Icelandic bank.

Some £1bn of public money – including £1m from Kirklees Council – was put at risk when Landsbanki went bust in October.

Kirklees was due to get the money back last month. But yesterday the council’s deputy leader revealed the cash was still not recovered.

Clr Kath Pinnock said: “I checked this week and we still haven’t got the money back.”

Clr Pinnock said Kirklees had clubbed together with the dozens of other councils who invested in Landsbanki to make their claims.

She said: “I think it hasn’t been sorted yet because some of the other councils had much larger sums invested. Kent County Council for instance, has £50m at risk.”

Clr Pinnock promised to keep trying to get the £1m back. She said: “Iceland is basically bankrupt and a lot of people are going to pay the price for that but, if I have anything to do with it, Kirklees taxpayers won’t.”
