IDEAS for the future of Edgerton Cemetery’s historic chapels are now being considered.

In December, the council asked developers and designers to come up with ideas for how the Victorian chapels could be re-used or renovated.

The deadline for ideas to be submitted was April 24.

A council spokesman confirmed that a number of ideas have been received and are being looked at.

He said: “The process is at an early stage and, as it is commercially sensitive, we can't say any more for the moment.”

The two Edgerton chapels have been long boarded up and fenced off.

Parts of the nearby Tower House have been hit with wet rot.

Other chapels in disrepair include two at Dewsbury Cemetery, two at Heckmondwike Cemetery and one each at Cleckheaton and Liversedge cemeteries.

The council estimates it would cost £1m to £2m to repair the chapels, with a further £100,000 a year to maintain them.

Previous ideas for the chapels include making them into educational facilities, historical information venues or commercial use.
