Plans for a walking and cycling track in north Kirklees have been unveiled.

Kirklees Council wants a dedicated route for recreation along a former railway line in Birstall.

It will provide a link from the existing Wilton Park Greenway to a cycle path constructed around a new housing development.

If approved it will help transform the disused railway corridor between Brookroyd Lane and The Crossings.

The site is currently overgrown with weeds and grass, although some sections are used by walkers.

Council documents show the section earmarked for improvement has been subject to anti-social behaviour, with glass bottles left and fire damage at the site.

They say there was also evidence of motorbikes using the site.

The plans say: “The route alignment uses the existing disused railway corridor in Batley between Brookroyd Lane and The Crossings.

“It will form a link between the existing Wilton Park Greenway, joining the new cycle path created by the new development under the existing Arthur Grove bridge.”

The council wants to improve the path quality and general appearance of site with a 2.5m wide tarmac surface.

The council has done a lot of work on greenways in the area with improvements to the Spen Valley Greenway and Wilton Park Cycle Path.

The application is open to public comments until December 9.
