MORE than £1m could be committed to improving roads around Huddersfield.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet will decide next week whether to upgrade roads in Slaithwaite and Paddock.

The proposals would lead to months of disruption for motorists.

The Labour Cabinet will decide on June 22 whether to commit £470,000 to improve Varley Road in Slaithwaite.

The work would cover a 1.3 mile stretch between Mansergh House on the edge of the village and the B6107 Chain Road near the White House pub.

The plan involves improving the road surface, kerbs and retaining walls.

If the Cabinet gives the go-ahead the work will begin by the end of this month and continue until November. The road would be closed to traffic during this time but would remain open for pedestrians.

Cabinet member for highways Clr David Sheard said: “The council will make every effort to reduce the duration of the road closure and minimise disruption whilst we make significant improvements to this local strategic route.”

The Varley Road plan is part of the council’s Roads Connecting Communities Surfacing Programme.

The Cabinet will consider another part of the programme on June 22.

In Paddock the council is considering spending £700,000 to improve 1.5 miles of road including Market Street, Church Street, Longwood Road, Paddock roundabout and Lowergate.

The work would include:

Re-kerbing and resurfacing pavements

Bus stop improvements including raised kerbs and bus stop clearways

Dropping the kerb level where appropriate to improve pedestrian access

Road resurfacing and drainage repairs

Junction realignment and changes to lining and signing

If Cabinet supports the plan, work will begin in August and continue until February 2011 with a break for Christmas.
