A £3M fitness club won planning consent yesterday.

DW Sports Fitness secured permission from members of the Huddersfield Planning Committee to transform the Almondbury Garage site on Wakefield Road, Moldgreen.

The site will become a health and fitness centre and include a 20-metre swimming pool. It will create 25 – 30 jobs.

The site was once a BMW garage.

DW Sports Fitness was set up in 2009 after Dave Whelan, the Wigan Football Club chairman, bought the JJB fitness clubs and adjoining sports stores.

In its application the company said it would operate seven days a week from 6.30am to 10pm weekdays and 8am to 10pm on weekends.

Membership prices would vary between £28 and £38 per month.

Councillors approved it unanimously without debate.
