Councillors will consider community spending plans totalling £27,854.

It will cover improvements for a recreation ground and a picnic area.

Members of the Huddersfield Area Committee will be asked to consider the funding at the public meeting on Tuesday at 7pm at Huddersfield Town Hall.

Council papers show that £5,000 could be spent on a picnic area and a Friends group for Snow Island.

The area, off Kings Mill Lane, is university accommodation but the land around it is part-owned by the council.

A Friends group would form to take “stewardship” of the area and carry out initial maintenance works to the woodland before seating, litter bins and the picnic area are added.

The Area Committee report says: “The proposal seeks an allocation of £5,000 from delegated revenue funds to allow the purchase of basic infrastructure items, seats etc and to carry out preliminary clearance of footpath lines and general woodland maintenance work to make the area safe for use by the public.

“A Friends group will be established which will eventually take on the general stewardship of the area maintaining the site in a clean and tidy state. This proposal will create a new informal public recreation area on land which is currently derelict.”

Kirklees Council adds the Friends group will “remove some of the burden from the council”.

A further £10,090 could be allocated to resurfacing the ball court, improving footpaths and new seats at Lepton Recreational Ground; £6,674 on a variety of community learning activities linked to Almondbury Children’s Centre and the high school plus £6,000 for projects supporting older and vulnerable adults in Fixby and Cowcliffe.

The meeting will also look at what the council can do to help combat domestic violence.

Area committee chair, Clr Judith Hughes, said: “By understanding the current situation in Huddersfield and the support services available we can work together in communities across Huddersfield to reduce and prevent domestic abuse.
