Kirklees councillors will get an update later today over the Tesco withdrawal from the Huddersfield development plans.
They will receive a statement concerning the firm’s decision to withdraw its plans for the Huddersfield Sports Centre site in Southgate site when the council meets at 6pm.
Liberal Democrat councillors had asked for a debate, which was refused, but a statement will be given by the Mayor, Clr Ken Smith.
Tesco shocked the council last week when it confirmed it was dropping plans for a superstore on the Southgate site.
It was also revealed that the firm has yet to pay all the money pledged to Kirklees for the new Huddersfield Leisure Centre in Springwood.
Clr Nicola Turner, Liberal Democrat Group Leader said: “The regeneration of the Southgate site is clearly a massive issue for Huddersfield, job creation and local economic growth and is of real significant concern to local people who do not want the land standing derelict for years to come.”
