AFFORDABLE houses will be built in the Holme Valley.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet yesterday agreed to release £187,000 to help fund 24 homes at the Fearnought Works site in Holmfirth.

The money will go towards the £1.4m development on Huddersfield Road by Johnnie Johnson Housing Trust.

The council’s investment comes from money paid by developers in return for planning permission.

The cash will be used to help fund 12 homes for rent and 12 for shared ownership at the Huddersfield Road site.

Council leader Clr Mehboob Khan welcomed the investment at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall.

The Greenhead Labour man said: “We need 127 new affordable units in this area every year.

“We might think of Holmfirth as an affluent area, but there are people on low incomes who will benefit from these properties.

“I’m very pleased that we will have these brand new properties in this sought-after site because there are 10,000 people on the housing waiting list”.
