TENANTS are taking advantage of a new programme allowing them to move to more appropriate housing.

Kirklees Council’s Homefit scheme helps families living in over-crowded homes to move to bigger properties. It also allows people to move from homes that are too large for their needs. Since the programme started last year, 65 council tenants have down-sized, freeing up 94 bedrooms. Fifty-two overcrowded households have been helped to find larger properties. The council’s Cabinet member for housing Clr Shabir Pandor said: “The council is making the best use of its resources. This is a highly cost-effective way of addressing the housing needs of our local communities at a very difficult time for local government.”
