FIREFIGHTERS are urging home owners to get their chimneys cleaned to prevent fires.
In the last four months, there have been 10 fires in Kirklees and 55 across West Yorkshire which could have been prevented if chimneys had been swept.
The West Yorkshire Fire Service warned a blocked or defective chimney can cause both chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning if left unswept.
Ian Bitcon, area manager for fire safety, said: “All we ask is that you have your chimney swept regularly by a registered chimney sweep to keep you and your family safe.”
The guidelines for sweeping are:
Smokeless fuels – at least once a year,
Bituminous coal – at least twice a year,
Wood – quarterly when in use,
Oil – once a year,
Gas – once a year.
