MORE Government cash is on the way to Kirklees to fund council online services.

The authority's growing reputation as being at the forefront of opening up council services for personal computer access seven days a week, including a text messaging pilot scheme, has attracted more grants.

The news was welcomed by Clr Paul Battye, Cabinet member for administration and business.

He said the council had a comprehensive customer services strategy aimed at opening up all avenues of contact for residents with the council.

These include better face-to-face services at the frontline, telephone, internet access, digital television (DiTV), and `chatback' a mobile phone text message service.

"Kirklees has been leading the field on e-government, and this has been further recognised by several Government grants totalling more than £1m," he said.

"This money will be used by the council to further develop and to help other local authorities roll out services."

About 40% of residents in Kirklees are able to contact the council or get local information through digital TV following the `INtouch' Kirklees digital TV service being expanded this year to Sky viewers.

Kirklees Council is the only local authority nationally selected to pilot the text messaging initiative.

Chatback is a free text message service for young people between the ages of 13 and 21 funded by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

Kirklees Council send registered users text messages about events, gigs, life advice, workshops, education, accommodation, leaving school and exclusive offers.
