COUNCILLORS are putting on a New Year’s Day bus service in Huddersfield.

Newsome Green councillors have organised the minibus to run on the route of the 319 on January 1.

The bus will run on the hour from 11am until 7pm, beginning at Fair Lead Road in Berry Brow and stopping at Edale Avenue and Newsome Church before heading into the town centre.

After stopping at Westgate, the bus will go on to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary before returning along the same route.

The Green Party has been running the seasonal mini-bus since the 1990s.

Clr Andrew Cooper, who leads the Greens on Kirklees Council, said: “This is one of the longest-running regular volunteer bus services in the country.

“We have seen some progress in recent years with Metro and First reintroducing services on Boxing Day on many routes, but unfortunately not all.

“Our aim has never been to replace existing services during holiday periods.”
