THE nation has gone mad for Strictly Come Dancing it seems.

And yesterday, the TV programme inspired Huddersfield youngsters to take to the floor.

The young pupils tripped the light fantastic at Scissett Middle School and put on a great show.

And they were watched by ballroom dancers from a different era, as the invited audience included many grandparents, delighted as the children showcased their toe-tapping talents.

The youngsters were perhaps spurred on in their efforts as the hit BBC TV show Strictly Come Dancing, presented by Bruce Forsythe, pictured, gears up for the final this weekend, when it is likely to be watched by more than 12m viewers.

Odile Scouarnec, who helped co-ordinate the event, told the Examiner: “It’s been fantastic. We had 86 grandparents attend and have been overwhelmed with the uptake. We had 40 pupils dance at least one dance and they really enjoyed doing it.

“To think they have only been learning for a few months is very impressive.”Ms Scouarnec said the Year 8 pupils had been taught the waltz, cha cha, and the jive in their PE lessons this term.

She added: “We sent a letter home and were inundated with responses.

“We have decided next year we will have a competition as the lessons have created such a buzz about school.”

The school has got involved with dancing as part of Kirklees Essentially Dance Initiative which introduced sessions in PE lessons and after-school clubs.

In many areas, the schools have linked with older people’s groups for a real inter-generational dance experience.

Dr Judith Hooper, director of public health for NHS Kirklees and Kirklees Council, said: “Essentially Dance Kirklees is a fantastic opportunity to give children the chance to learn new skills and gain the benefits of taking part in regular physical activity.

“Our evaluation so far has shown a really positive impact on self-esteem, social skills and self-confidence.”

Australian actor Jason Donovan, McFly drummer Harry Judd and Waterloo Road star Chelsee Healey are the line-up for this weekend’s Strictly final in Blackpool.
