Schools and other community groups across Huddersfield will be getting the healthy eating message next week.

Kirklees Council will be encouraging everyone to think about the importance of what they eat and drink as part of Kirklees Good Food Week from March 17, which combines activity to promote Big Dig Day and National Nutrition and Hydration week.

During the week, the council will promote access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable local food for everyone no matter where they live or how old they are.

To mark the week the council along with their partners at local care homes and voluntary and community organisations will be raising awareness and improving understanding of the vital importance of good nutrition and hydration – an initiative that is attracting worldwide support and praise.

Clr Molly Walton, Kirklees Council Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care said: “Good nutrition and hydration is particularly important for our older and more vulnerable residents. We are supporting this important campaign by promoting key messages and delivering some training and good practice sessions to care workers and managers.”

There will be activities taking place in care homes, community and voluntary sector groups across the district.

Headteachers will be attending the Kirklees Food in Educational Setting event on March 18 at the Textile Centre Huddersfield. They will find out more about free infant school meals, the recent changes to OFTED inspections (incorporating the dining room environment), and how the implementation of the school food plan will help to embrace the importance of food in the development and achievements of children.

Anyone interested in growing, cooking and eating good, healthy food in Kirklees can now find all the information they need on the new Food Partnership website www.kirklees.gov.uk/food
