A PLEASURE railway line is to celebrate its 21st birthday with a train trip for each year this Saturday.

Kirklees Light Railway (KLR) will celebrate its 21st anniversary on October 20 by running 21 trips on the day.

KLR opened to the public on October 19, 1991 under the ownership of the Taylor family.

After negotiations, and with support from Kirklees Council, a Light Railway Order was granted in September 1991, one of the last to be made under the 1896 Light Railway Act.

The line opened in stages from Clayton West to Cuckoo’s Nest, in October 1991, Skelmanthorpe, in December 1992 and Shelley, in May 1997.

The volunteer-run railway, which welcomes 50,000 visitors each year, will also celebrate its birthday on October 20 by reducing fares to their original 1991 prices.

KLR General Manager Stuart Ross said: “We have visitors of all ages and it’s great to see people who visited as children in the early days returning with their children. It is a privilege to be able to show off some of the wonderful local countryside.”
