A LEADING Kirklees councillor is to hold top-level talks with Sir Ian Blair, in the aftermath of terror attacks.

Labour group leader Clr Mehboob Khan will meet the Metropolitan Police Commissioner on Tuesday.

And he wants Huddersfield people to get involved - by passing on views and questions they want answered.

The meeting will focus on security, contingency planning and community relations.

Clr Khan is Kirklees's representative on the Local Government Association's Strategy Review Group.

Sir Ian has agreed to address it about matters of concern to councils following the London bombings.

Clr Khan said: "These are very important issues and what the London police boss thinks about security and community relations is important to all of us, as he will set the scene for the whole country.

"Other chief constables are likely to follow his lead.

"It is essential that in this country we have policing by consent and that the community have confidence in the police force. It is important he gets to hear the views and concerns of people who represent the rest of the country, just as it is important that we get to understand his thinking.

"This meeting will be a unique opportunity to gain an insight into the development of policing in this country.

"Clearly, I have views that I will want to put across and questions that I will want to pose to Sir Ian Blair.

"However I represent the interests of the council and Kirklees people as a whole on this key committee.

"So I would urge anyone who has views or questions about the way in which our policing is reacting to recent events to get in touch with me. Then I can raise the issues with Sir Ian."
