Bradley Park Golf Course president has revealed dozens of members are working hard to hatch an “intelligent” opposition to the threat to their club.

A campaign to save the 18-hole-course – the only public course in Kirklees – has begun.

As reported, the entire course was a surprise inclusion as a site for housing in the council’s Local Plan.

There is also a big campaign via social media to save the golf course.

Two months on from the shock announcement, club officials have said they have been plotting how to best see off the latest threat to the course.

And club president, Keith Waddington, has vowed there will be no “mass hysteria” or abuse as they move to defend their course from the clutches of developers.

“Our protest will be robust and enthusiastic,” he said. “But it will be more like a rifle than a shotgun.

“All members of the golf club will be involved. We’re not going out all guns blazing – we don’t want mass hysteria.

“We’re trying to contain it and control it and do it in a proper manner.”

Mr Waddington said the club is seeking expert planning advice at the same time as building support in the community.

He revealed club officials had an “enlightening” meeting with Kirklees Council and Kirklees Active Leisure over the controversial proposal to build 2,000 homes on the land.

He said in his view it was worth campaigning against the proposal to offer the fairways over to housing firms.

“I don’t think it’s certain,” he said.“I don’t think it’s probable, but it is possible. I certainly don’t think it’s a done deal.

“What we need is expertise in planning protest.

“We don’t want a load of abuse – we will have a structured discussion and an unemotional response.

“That’s what I am determined we will do.

“We want to respond with energy, doing the right things rather than wasting energy on the wrong ones.”

Fans of the Bradley Road course have launched a Facebook group ‘Save Bradley Park’ and are encouraging people to comment in the official consultation at www.kirklees.gov.uk/localplan
