KIRKLEES Council is one of the best in a survey of local authority advice for disabled people – scoring 11 out of 20.

A major national survey found many local authorities are doing a poor job informing disabled people about financial help available to them.

Kirklees was joint 27th of 120 councils surveyed by disabled charity Livability.

The council’s website was given six out of ten while help provided on the telephone got five out of ten.

A Kirklees spokeswoman said: “There is support, advice and information for lots of people, including older people, children and families, people with mental health problems, people who are homeless and looking for a home, people with disabilities, people who need help to live independently, people who are unpaid carers and young people and their families.”

Livability carried out ‘mystery shopper’ investigations of councils’ support for disabled people.

The survey found nearly half (51%) of enquiries were misdirected, while more than a quarter of local authorities were unable to provide any information at all.

Livability gave City of London and Portsmouth City Council 20 out of 20.

York, with 14, was the best in Yorkshire. Calderdale was one of 21 to be given zero.
