PENSIONERS have a new way to keep their balance during the winter.

Kirklees Council this week agreed to spend £360 on 60 pairs of ice claws.

The devices are strapped over normal footwear to give extra balance.

The council’s Valleys Area Committee agreed to invest in the ice claws for older people in the Golcar ward.

Lib Dem Clr Andrew Marchington, who represents the area on Kirklees, said: “People will be shown how to use them and they are suitable for older and younger people. They won’t guarantee that you don’t fall but they will reduce the risk if used properly.”

Anyone wishing to use the ice claws must sign a disclaimer pledging not to sue the council if they fall while wearing them.
