GRIT shortages should not cause problems for Kirklees drivers – despite more wintry weather being predicted.

Kirklees Council Highways teams say they have enough grit to cope with the freezing temperatures that have been forecast.

Mark Dobson, Kirklees unit manager for streetcare, said: “I can cope with the forecast weather. I have got supplies to do that.

“We are being careful with our supplies though because we don’t know how long this situation’s going to last or if our deliveries will continue. Grit may have to be sent elsewhere.”

Grit stores have run low across the UK because of last week’s heavy snow.

Around 100,000 tonnes have now been shipped in from Spain, Germany, Italy and Tunisia.

In Kirklees, 31 teams were out treating side streets and main routes yesterday.

Mr Dobson added: “We will continue to react to the conditions as they come.”

Communities secretary Hazel Blears also hit back at critics who said grit supplies should have been increased when bad weather was forecast.

“These are once in 20-year occurrences, so obviously we are not going to keep these stocks all the time, it would be a waste of taxpayers’ money.”
