KIRKLEES top cop was given a top award at a police ceremony at The Galpharm Stadium last night.

Chief Inspector Ian Gayles received the Chief Constable’s Commendation in recognition of his work conducted during the hunt for Shannon Matthews in Dewsbury last year.

Chief Insp Gayles was a Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector at the time and was given the accolade for his vital assistance to the investigation team.

His leadership in reassuring and supporting the local community was also noted.

The complex investigation resulted in the successful recovery of Shannon Matthews and prosecution of those responsible for her kidnapping and false imprisonment.

The special ceremony saw more than 100 officers and members of the public honoured for dealing with challenging situations.
