TORY leader Robert Light has praised Kirklees Council for banking a £6m underspend.
Clr Light said it was prudent that the cash should be saved with more cuts likely in future years.
Clr Light slammed the Liberal Democrats for wanting to spend the cash.
He accused them of pursuing the “politics of the past”.
Clr Light said the council was right to bank the underspend, and that the money must be used to protect present services in future years. He said the council needed to save a further £64m by 2015 meaning essential services were facing cuts and that officers should be congratulated on the efficiencies.
He added: “We would all like to invest in our services across the board, but in the present financial climate what is the best use of a £6m windfall?
“We won’t deliver real outcomes for our residents by throwing money at the problem as the Liberal Democrats suggest. That is the politics of the past.”
The Lib Dems want to spend the money on protecting libraries, improving roads and helping people back into work.
