A WOMAN was being slowly poisoned by carbon monoxide in her own home.

But she was saved by fitters working on a big energy-saving project.

Pre-installation checks by Kirklees Warm Zone contractors may well have saved the life of the woman, who has not been named.

Warm Zone contractors, Miller Pattison, alerted the local resident to a carbon monoxide leak in her Cleckheaton home.

As well as providing free home insulation, the Kirklees Council Warm Zone scheme offers households a free carbon monoxide detector.

Installer Tony Suddick noticed a problem in the living room when he turned on the gas fire to check the ventilation.

He turned the new carbon monoxide detector on and its alarm activated immediately showing there was carbon monoxide in the room.

He opened all the windows and doors and rang the fuel supplier. The gas engineers found a faulty flue. The system needed replacing.

A spokesman said: “If it wasn’t for Tony’s investigation, the householder could very well have lost her life”.

The resident was surprised when she found she had been suffering from symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

She said: “I always seemed to be asleep in the day, but I just put it down to old age.

“Since they fixed the problem I feel much better and more healthy”.

She added: “I would never have known about it if Tony hadn’t checked”.
