A hospice has appealed for help to ensure a charity ball can go ahead.

Kirkwood Hospice is concerned about low ticket sales to its special Mothers’ Day concert, which was due to be held in Huddersfield Town Hall on March 15.

A potential big fundraiser for the charity, it had been backed by Kirklees Mayor Clr Ken Smith, who named the charity as his chosen one of the year.

Now staff at the hospice have appealed for more people to come along and treat their female relatives to an afternoon of rousing entertainment.

The event is due to be hosted by one of the original cast members of the Phantom of the Opera, Barry Clark, who will preside over a selection of modern classics and upbeat celebratory music that will feature some of the best local musical acts.

On the bill to play are Huddersfield Choral Society Junior Choir, Serenata, Colne Valley Male Voice Choir and Hope Bank Youth Band.

A vintage tea party will take place beforehand for those who buy VIP tickets.

Jim Coward, hospice spokesman, said: “The event has not had the support of ticket sales that we would have liked so far and we were expecting to have sold more tickets by now.

“We’re not totally sure why this has been the case, perhaps people have already made other plans for Mothers’ Day, but we don’t want to pull the concert because it will be a lovely event in a great venue.”

Tickets to the event cost

£8 for adults and £5 for children and the event will start at 4.30pm.

They can be purchased online at tickets.kirklees.gov.uk or by calling 01484 223200.
