A KNIFE-WIELDING robber attacked an 88-year-old woman as she lay asleep in bed at her home.

The attacker entered the frail pensioner's Bromley Street home in Hanging Heaton, near Batley, at 4.30am yesterday.

The woman was asleep in her bed when she heard someone come into her bedroom.

The suspect grabbed hold of her, held her down and told her to be quiet.

She received what appeared to be knife injuries to her neck and hand.

She called out and a neighbour came to her assistance. The suspect then fled.

The robber was described as a white male, aged about 20, medium build with short fair hair.

He was clean shaven and wore a light coloured jacket.

Jewellery was stolen from the victim, who was taken to hospital and later discharged.

Det Insp Jon Morgan, of Huddersfield CID, said: "This was a nasty, vicious attack on an elderly lady and we would urge anyone with information to get in contact."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dewsbury Police on 01924 431059 or Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
