Boxing legend Frank Bruno comes to Huddersfield in February to help raise money and awareness for a mental health charity.

Former world champion Bruno, 53, who has bipolar disorder, is backing the Leanne Baker Trust, set up in memory of an Almondbury woman who suffered from clinical depression.

Bruno, who was sectioned under the Mental Health Act in 2003 amid lurid tabloid headlines, has been a long-time campaigner for mental health issues.

His condition is now controlled with medication and he is back on the after-dinner speaking circuit.

Tickets are now on sale for An Audience with Frank Bruno, to be held at the John Smith’s Stadium on Friday, February 13.

During the event it is hoped that thousands of pounds will be raised for the trust with an auction and raffle.

Leanne was the sister of renowned Meltham artist Darren Baker, who has also raised substantial funds for the trust.

Leanne, 35, was found hanged at her home in June 2013. An inquest was told how she had battled depression and the coroner decided she had taken her own life.

The dinner will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Bruno’s 1995 championship bout against Oliver McCall.

And one fan who can’t wait to meet him is namesake Bruno – alias Huddersfield Giants’ star Michael Lawrence.

Muscular Michael, who bears more than a passing resemblance to the boxer, will head a table of players and officials from the Giants.

Event organiser James Beattie, of seeitnowsports.com, said he chose the trust to benefit as mental health was a cause close to the boxer’s heart.

“We felt it was a good opportunity to raise awareness and some money,” said James. “Mental health can often be a taboo subject but Frank has come through his problems and he is back on top form.”

James said there would be some special guests on the night – and some special items to auction. More will be revealed later.

Guests will enjoy a three-course meal and entertainment and have the chance to meet Bruno and have pictures taken with him.

Afterwards there will be a party at the Rock Cafe in Huddersfield.

Tickets cost £45, £55 and £65. For more information, click here.
