A man was branded an “idiot” by a district judge after pinching a Kirklees Council worker’s glasses while drunk.

Kyle Lynch, who donned the glasses before getting into the man’s car and revving the engine, admitted drunk and disorderly behaviour.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that the worker was forced to flag down police over the 23-year-old’s behaviour outside St Peter’s Church in Huddersfied town centre.

Rory Byrne, prosecuting, said that the incident happened at 7.30am on April 19.

He told the court: “The council worker flagged down passing police after experiencing trouble from this defendant.

“He’d knocked the glasses off the man then put them on himself.”

The court was told that Lynch, of Town End in Almondbury, then jumped into the council worker’s car which had been left running and revved the engine.

Police retrieved the glasses from Lynch, who seemed drunk.

Lynch, who appeared in court in custody after missing a previous hearing, swore at police as he was forcibly detained and arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

Bob Carr, mitigating, said that his client had little recollection about the incident.

He added: “He knows he was misbehaving and apologises to the court.

“He’s very fortunate he didn’t put it (the car) into gear and move it otherwise he would have been in serious trouble.”

District Judge Michael Fanning ordered Lynch to pay a total of £285 for “behaving like a complete idiot”.
