COUNCILLORS yesterday gave Labour the green light to continue in charge.

Clr Mehboob Khan was confirmed as leader of Kirklees Council without a vote after no other candidate put their name forward.

The Greenhead (inset) man heads the 27-strong Labour group on the 69-member council.

Clr Khan was elected to a four-year term last year but volunteered to resign after 12 months and put himself up for re-election.

But none of the other parties put forward a candidate at yesterday’s annual meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall, meaning Clr Khan will continue in post.

The Labour man spelt out his plans for the year ahead yesterday.

“We need to try and reduce unemployment and we need to tackle the gap in life chances for people in Dewsbury,” he said.

Clr Robert Light, who leads the 22-strong opposition Conservatives, said the council needed to “listen to all communities across the borough.”

He added that his party would “work constructively” with other groups.

Clr Kath Pinnock, leader of the 14-strong Lib Dems, said her party was “determined to ensure fair access to youth services in Kirklees.”

Clr Andrew Cooper, head of the four-strong Green group said there needed to be more trust between political groups in the next year.
