A woolly homage to the world’s greatest bike race has been knitted by the women of Thurstonland.

The now famous knitting group at St Thomas’ Church has created its own peleton of cyclists in honour of the Tour De France, which passes just a mile away from the tiny village.

The handmade characters are the latest from the group’s knitting circle, who last hit the headlines with their London 2012 characters and before that their Prince Woolliam and Kate Middleton characters for the 2011 Royal Wedding.

Knitting group member, Brenda Mellor, said: “We had to use wire and wood to create the bikes and the cyclists; it was much tougher than the things we’ve done before.”

The knitters also had a hand to play in creating the mini-wool Tour De France yellow and polka dot jerseys for bunting around the village and the Holme Valley.
