RESIDENTS are celebrating after house-building plans were blocked at Longwood.

Developers wanted to build on land formerly occupied by Spark Hall School, near Quarry Court, Longwood Gate.

They appealed after Kirklees Council rejected planning permission.

But their challenge has now been thrown out by an independent inspector. He said he feared the development would cause parking problems.

The builders were trying to overturn existing rules which say the land can be used only for old people's sheltered housing.

Colne Valley MP Kali Mountford welcomed the decision.

She said: "I am sure Longwood residents will be relieved to hear that existing traffic problems on Longwood Gate will not become worse.

"I am also pleased the land will remain an option for sheltered housing. We will increasingly require such housing as older people opt to stay at home and not go into residential care."
