A PUB landlord has called time on drivers who sneak in front of his pub in order to avoid red lights.

John Sutcliffe, of the White Cross Inn , Bradley Road, says he is fed up of the increasing number of drivers who dart into his car park entrance and then cut back onto the main road to avoid losing precious seconds at the lights.

Now he has seen red and emblazoned his message on a blackboard outside his hostelry in an attempt to shame drivers into behaving better.

Pictured with a set of traffic lights it says: “Shame on you still cutting through”.

John, who has been at the pub for 14 years, said: “Before the council altered the junction about five years ago I had no problems.

“But they did alter it and it’s not the fact that the drivers cut through so much as the speed at which they do it.

“While they are busy cutting through they are not looking for anyone coming out of the pub on foot, drivers coming out of the car park and anyone coming up Leeds Road .

“Since the changes the garden wall of the house next door on Leeds Road has been demolished not once but twice and people say it is time something was done.

“I did speak to the council about it some time ago and they put some speed bumps in but that has not resolved the problem.

“My fear is that one day there will be an accident involving a pedestrian.

“Drivers have to wait two minutes when the red light comes on and for some of them that it is two minutes too long.

“The worst times are the two rush hours at morning and evening. If I have to do any work outside I always put bollards or traffic cones up.”

Kirklees councillor Tony Brice, (Independent, Lindley ), and a pub regular, said: “It’s very hard to stop people from doing this sort of thing but I am glad John has decided to take a stand.

“These drivers are just taking the mickey. They are trying to save seconds and they could cause an accident.”
