A care home, rated ‘inadequate’ in all but one category, has been threatened with closure unless it makes urgent improvements.

Lands House was judged inadequate – the lowest rating – in four out of five criteria by Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors in their latest report on the Rastrick home.

The care home, for 30 people, was deemed inadequate in categories concerning safety, effectiveness, responsiveness and leadership.

The home, on New Hey Road, was judged as requiring improvement – the second lowest category – in a criteria covering the dignity and wellbeing of residents.

CQC inspectors, who visited in July, found the home understaffed and tired looking.

Inspectors criticised the home’s record keeping and expressed concern that some residents were not getting their medication or dietary supplements.

And while most residents and families praised the home, inspectors noted there was a lack of activities for residents with some left to watch TV all day.

Debbie Westhead, CQC’s Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care in the North, said: “Whilst we received some good comments about care people received and saw some improvements had been made since our previous inspection in February, we also observed incidents that were not caring and not all improvements to the service had been sustained.

“Since the inspection we have been working closely with the local authority to ensure that people being provided support are not at risk. We have placed this service in special measures and made it clear where action must be taken to address the concerns identified.

“We will re-inspect the service within six months to check whether sufficient improvements have been made. If we find that the service being provided remains inadequate, we will consider taking further steps to cancel its registration with CQC.”

Although the home was granted a clean bill of health in a report a year ago, Lands House had received mixed reports over the last four years.

Lands House owner Georgina Copley said the CQC had ‘changed its regime’ and since then, had written a ‘hatchet job’ of her business.

Mrs Copley denied the home was short-staffed and that there were insufficient activities for residents.

But Mrs Copley admitted Lands House was struggling with paperwork.

She said: “A year ago we were told we were meeting standards in seven out of seven categories. I asked why there had been so much difference since the last report... It’s because the CQC has changed its regime. We’re not doing anything different to how it was before.

“The problem is documentation; there’s that much put on us... The amount of money and time we have wasted on paperwork.

“I understand it’s there for a good reason but there’s only 24 hours in a day.”

Mrs Copley added: “We are trying our absolute upmost to follow the CQC guidelines.”
