KIRKLEES has just one police station open 24 hours a day.

But it helps to keep West Yorkshire among the two-thirds of police forces still offering day and night police stations - as none are open day and night in a third of UK police forces.

Although Kirklees has police stations spread across towns including Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Batley, Mirfield and Holmfirth, there are only three now open to the public.

Decisions to close some to the public and reduce the opening hours of others has led to controversy in the past.

But a national survey revealed that outside London only one in 10 police stations are open to the public 24 hours a day.

In total, 202 - or 13% - of the 1,538 police stations in England and Wales are open at all times.

Eighteen police forces, more than a third of the 43 police forces in England and Wales, have no stations at all open 24 hours.

Kirklees' only police station open all day and night is Huddersfield.

The hours at Dewsbury police station were cut at the start of this month so it is now only open from 8am to 10pm.

The third police station in Kirklees that has a public counter is in Holmfirth - open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday.

The cutbacks are part of a process to plug a £17m hole in West Yorkshire Police's budget which has occurred despite council tax rises way above inflation over several years.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Before the decisions were made surveys were carried out to find out how many people were using the helpdesks and at what times."

Alan Gordon, vice-chairman of the Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, said the figures showed the "stark reality" of modern policing.

He said: "If a police force carries out a survey on how many people use a police station after a certain time and they do not deem it to be cost-effective, they will close it.

"That does nothing for public reassurance.

"We would like to see all police stations open 24 hours. The stark reality is that is never going to happen again."
