SOCCER legend Denis Law is recovering in hospital after being treated for prostate cancer.

The former Huddersfield Town, Manchester United and Scotland striker, who is 63, had surgery on Tuesday.

He is said to be in "good spirits" after an operation at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport that went well.

Surgeons said the cancer had been discovered at an early stage and he may be discharged this weekend.

News of his condition was announced in a statement by Manchester United.

It came just weeks after Law made a nostalgic return to Huddersfield for a book signing of his autobiography, The King.

He started his career at the old Leeds Road ground, netting 19 goals in 91 appearances, before moving to Manchester City, Italian club Torino and then Manchester United.

The statement issued by United said: "Everyone at Manchester United - players, staff and fans - would like to wish Denis Law all the best as he recovers from surgery for prostate cancer."
