LAWYERS from Huddersfield are flying to Africa to train their Ugandan counterparts, sponsored by the Irish Government.

Solicitors Nigel Priestley, Anne Pendlebury, Claire Monkhouse and Sarah Ward will fly this week to the Ugandan capital, Kampala, to train African lawyers in office practice.

A link between the Huddersfield and Ugandan law societies was set up in 2002, allowing over 150 African lawyers to gain vital experience and tuition.

The Huddersfield Law Society has sent 3,000 law books to the Ugandan Legal Resource Centre and plans to send more on the trip.

Mr Priestley said: "The solicitors who are going are not paid. They are giving their time to prepare their talks to make sure this project helps to make a practical difference.

"The air fares cost \'a32,000. When the British government's international development department couldn't help towards the travel costs, we were delighted to find the Irish Government would.

"They recognised this training will help share the practical insights we have learnt so Ugandan lawyers can apply them in their own firms."
