PEOPLE wanting to get fit in the new year should forget about gyms and walk round a reservoir instead.

Yorkshire Water owns 72,000 acres of land and is inviting people to use it to stay healthy and enjoy some stunning views of landscapes.

Company spokesman David Simister said: "Walking, unlike other forms of fitness, can involve all the family, regardless of age, and can fit in with any lifestyle.

"With no joining fee or monthly membership charge, a walk round a reservoir is far cheaper and more enjoyable than a session in the gym.

"Each year we invest thousands of pounds in recreational activities in order to provide our customers access to the finest Yorkshire countryside."

Studies have shown that walking is one of the best forms of exercise.

Just 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week can significantly reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
