A burglar who smashed his way into a shop was caught when police saw the distinctive green hoodie he was wearing hanging in his hallway.

And there were shards of glass still inside Desmond Ledgister’s hood, Kirklees magistrates were told.

He admitted burgling Blacker Road Convenience Store in Birkby on January 3.

The court heard that the break-in happened at just before 2am and a witness called police.

Andy Wills, prosecuting, said: “They reported a person crawling out of the shop door window with the shop till in their possession.

“Police descended quickly on the area and saw the shop till dumped at the rear of the premises.”

The officers saw Ledgister, 45, returning to his home on nearby Lee Head.

The clothes he was wearing matched the description given to them by the witness.

Mr Wills said: “The defendant answered the door and they noticed a green hooded jacket in the hallway.

“They saw shards of glass inside the hood, he was arrested and the clothing was forensically analysed.”

A shopkeeper at the attacked premises downloaded the CCTV footage which showed Ledgister.

She recognised him as a shop regular named Des and said that he lived behind the store.

Magistrates heard that around £30 in loose change and £400 in notes inside an envelope in the till were taken.

The till was also damaged beyond repair.

Ledgister told police that he smashed the shop window and crawled in because he was desperate for money.

Magistrates ordered a full report before sentencing him on February 4.

In the meantime he is banned from entering the store.
