A MAN arrested by police after allegedly threatening a baby and police is today undergoing a mental assessment.

The Examiner had exclusive pictures of the dramatic moment armed police used a Taser to temporarily disable the man and detain him on the Town estate close to the Galpharm Stadium.

The 20-year-old man was holding a baby and at one point was allegedly wielding two knives when he was confronted by police on Tuesday teatime.

He was holding the young child as he stood on Bradley Mills Lane near Leeds Road.

A West Yorkshire Police statement said when officers arrived, the man allegedly picked up another blade and threatened to kill officers.

One officer had to be treated for a knife wound after the drama at around 5.25pm.

A team of armed officers then arrived at the scene near Comet on Leeds Road and shot at the man with Tasers and rubber bullets.

The man fell to the ground and was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon, among other offences.

He was bailed yesterday and now is being assessed under the Mental Health Act.

Kirklees police commander Chief Superintendent John Robins said: “I am incredibly proud of all the officers involved in the arrest of a 20-year-old man at Bradley Mills Lane in Huddersfield.

“In what was a violent and distressing situation, the officers acted bravely and with courage.

“In order to protect the community from harm, they put themselves in the line of danger.

“Unarmed officers who confronted the man were injured in preventing others from coming to harm.

“As a result of their actions there were thankfully no injuries to members of the public.

“These officers have shown the bravery and courage required to be a police officer.

“Such traumatic and violent incidents are rare in Kirklees, but this illustrates yet again that our police are not only quick to react, but brave in their actions.”

The incident has been reported to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Huddersfield CID are appealing for witnesses with any information or who took pictures and video footage of the drama to call 01484 436685.
