Thousands of people were thrown into travel chaos yesterday after trouble on the railway.

A cracked track in Standedge tunnel and a fallen tree at Todmorden meant scores of train travellers faced hours of delays across the network.

Dismayed commuters described grim scenes of hundreds of people crammed onto the platforms at Leeds railway station where the Huddersfield train departs.

However, the great British public did what it always does in times like this - queue patiently!

Almost there...

Meanwhile, engineers were working hard to resolve the problems.

An apologetic First TransPennine Express reported delays into the night, with many passengers being shipped around on replacement coaches.

At 10pm the travel company told commuters to only travel if they needed to, with disruption expected until late. Finally the repairs were done just after midnight.

It was a long day for everyone but most managed to get home fairly unscathed...

And some just went to the pub!
