A LEGAL adviser and prosecutor were left with red faces yesterday after asking magistrates to approve a warrant – for a man already in jail.

Sulaiman Kazi and Vanessa Schofield asked the bench at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court to back a warrant without bail for Kevin Godfrey, 37.

He had been charged with stealing a large amount of top-quality, silverside beef from the Co-operative store in Gomersal on April 8. He is currently in Armley prison.

But eagle-eyed chairman of the bench John Rotchell spotted the error and Godfrey is now set to be in court via video link on June 27.

A further warrant for Mathew Sommerville, 33, of Elmfield Avenue, Milnsbridge, was issued after he failed to appear.

He is charged with stealing beer worth £11.49 from Asda at Aspley, on May 22.
